| A Brief History of the Hughes Family in Blount County, later (c. 1867) Loudon County, Tennessee. Compiled by Robert Hughes Dulaney about 1970, with later revisions, and addendum. The old family bible has been restored by the present owners and has been used in this history as well. The bible is displayed in the Moses Hughes house.
The Hughes were of Welsh and Scotch descent, and it is very well established that the two brothers came to Tennessee From Virginia, perhaps through North Carolina, around 1800. The route through North Carolina is not established, but this would have been one of the logical routes to pursue, either through the Little Tennessee River gorge or through the French Broad River area. It is known that Robert Hughes and Moses Hughes settled on the Little Tennessee River in what is now the Morganton-Jackson Ferry section of Loudon County (formerly Blount County), Tennessee. A land grant claim survey of 331 acres for Moses Hughes, dated June 23, 1807, cited the boundaries as adjoining lands of Robert Hughes, John Franks, Joe P. Greenway, William Barnes, and Erasmas Tippet. This document is signed by Willie Blount, Governor of Tennessee and W. G. Blount, Secretary. The names of Johnston Bain and Valentine Mayo appear as certifying surveyors, along with Josiah Patty, Deputy Surveyor. |

| The family took part in the political and cultural life of the Morganton community and shared with others in constructive activities conducive to the betterment of all the citizens of the section. (It is interesting to note that in his will dated May 8, 1856, Robert Hughes stated, "I want the children all schooled as well as circumstances will admit.") They had conservative leanings and were of devout religious faith, being affiliated with Methodist and Presbyterian churches of the area. They were among the organizers and founders of the National Campground, which was located on land donated by R. Peler Hughes. At least one of the Hughes family served with the Federal forces in the Civil War. | |
| The name of the wife of Moses Hughes has not been definitely established, but is now believed to have been the Miream Hughes buried in the Hughes Family Cemetery in1854. (The burial place of Moses Hughes is not known.) It is known that Moses Hughes had three sons: Robert, Charles, and Moses H. This is indicated in a deed of Moses H. Hughes dated August 13, 1934, in which he transferred "all rights, title, interest and claim I have in estate of my father, Moses Hughes, deceased". Moses Hughes also had a daughter Mary Elizabeth, who married Gilbert Blankenship. This relationship is in a deed of conveyance made by her and her husband, Gilbert Blankenship, to Robert and Charles Hughes in 1839 in which she stated that this was a part of land she received from her father, Moses Hughes, deceased. Gilbert Blankenship in the same document, states that he transfers his interest in the property, being the 1/5 undivided interest that he (Blankenship) had purchased from Hugh K. Hughes. This document is attested by M. H. Hughes and H. C. Kelso. It is noted that Robert Hughes, son of Moses, also had a son Hugh Keen Hughes who was born July 4, 1939 and died Jan. 24, 1921.
It has been very well established that some of the early Hughes family moved on West, even as far as the Portland, Oregon area. Robert Hughes (b. 1809, d. 1856) married Theresa Keen (b. 1817, d. 1897), probably the daughter of Enoch Hugh Keen (1785-1856). They had eight children, only four of whom lived to adulthood: Hugh Keen, Enoch Moses, Robert Peler and Mary Elizabeth. Robert Hughes and his wife, Theresa, are buried in the Hughes Family Cemetery located on the Hughes Farm, along with James M. Hughes (1846-1852), W. L. Hughes (1855-1857), Thomas W. Scott Hughes (1849-1861) and there is a grave marked "Miream Hughes Died 1854". No birth date given. As noted above, she is believed to have been the wife of Moses Hughes. These burials were disinterred and moved by Tennessee Valley Authority to the Hughes Plot at Grandview Cemetery, Maryville, Tennessee in 1976. |
